Cops fear surge in Glasgow gangland hits from feuding Lyons and Daniels after hacking encrypted EncroChat messages

COPS are braced for a surge of gangland hits after exposing dozens of murder plots when they hacked a secret phone network.

Some 40 members of the feuding Lyons and Daniel clans are understood to have been told that their lives were at risk after experts decoded texts sent via EncroChat.

Mob members had been left baffled by the sudden rise in written kill bid alerts from police — known as Osman warnings.

But underworld sources reckon they’re linked to the blitz on the Europe-wide encrypted crooks’ hotline.

One insider said: “Lots of guys on both sides were being warned they were under threat and needed protection. It came out of nowhere.

Police Scotland seize £25MILLION of drugs in Operation Venetic – the UK’s biggest EVER organised crime bust

“No one could figure out where the information was coming from until word got out that EncroChat had been hacked.

“The police must have seen messages about planned attacks on certain individuals. They had to warn them.

“Tensions are as high as ever — this won’t stop attacks in the future.

We told how crimebusters trawled 25million EncroChat messages in a bid to prevent drug deals and assassinations.

They also seized more than £25million of drugs and £7million of dirty cash in Scotland alone during Operation Venetic.

Hoods had no idea their conversations were being monitored for three months until the firm issued a security alert.

Many panicked and tossed their modified phones, worth up to £8,000, in the River Clyde.

The Lyons and Daniels have been locked in a violent power battle across Glasgow for nearly 20 years following a cocaine theft in 2001.

Crime boss Steven Lyons — who has a £200,000 bounty on his head — fled abroad after being shot in the 2006 Applerow Motors ambush.

Two Daniels gunmen, since jailed for 30 years each, fired at his uncle David’s garage in the city’s Lambhill His cousin Michael Lyons, 21, died.

Four years later, feared Daniel enforcer Kevin ‘Gerbil’ Carroll, 29, was killed in an Asda car park.

Lyons shooter William Paterson, 39, got life for the slaying.

Former taxi boss Steven ‘Bonzo’ Daniel, 40 — nephew of late crime kingpin Jamie — was tailed in a 100mph car chase before being carved up by blade thugs.

Six Lyons cronies were caged for a total of 104 years for the murder bid and plots against Daniel hoods.

Cops said they don’t comment on threat-to-life warnings.
