RETURNING HERO?

Steven Davis to Rangers – midfielder breaks silence on future after Southampton cleared the way for Ibrox return

STEVEN DAVIS has spoken about his future for the first time since it was revealed he has been given the green light to return to Rangers.

SunSport told yesterday how Southampton had cleared the way for the midfielder to make an emotional move back to Gers.

Now Northern Ireland international, 33, has spoken about his next career move, insisting he hasn't yet decided where his future lies.

Speaking to the Southern Daily Echo, Davis said: “I genuinely haven't given it much thought.

“It’s probably the first time I have come into the last year of my contract, but my focus is just getting us out of this situation as quickly as possible.

“Having been here so long and feeling that responsibility, I want to see the club doing well.”

Davis was omitted from the matchday squad for new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl's first match in charge in the 1-0 defeat to Cardiff.

And with his Premier League hero Steven Gerrard now in charge of his boyhood heroes, there is a clear pull for Davis to head back to Ibrox after leaving following the club's 2012 liquidation.

If he is to pull on the Light Blue again, Davis insists Gers will be getting an even better player than the one who left.

He added: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my whole time at the club.

“It’s turned out to be a really good relationship and I feel like I’ve improved as a player.

“I’ve learned a lot in general about myself.

“From the very first day that I came here, you see the level of professionalism and the level of desire to try and improve the club.

“It hasn’t worked out the way we would have liked in the last couple of years, but we have had some really good times.

“There is a real belief within the team that we have more quality than our position in the league suggests and it’s about going out and showing that.”
