But he could already be in line for a return to the Premier League when the transfer window opens again.

According to the Daily Mirror, Southampton's director of football Ross Wilson would be keen on bringing Arfield to St Mary's this summer.

The Scot - who turned down the chance to become Rangers' director of football in 2017 - knows the midfielder from their time at Falkirk together.

And they could be in line to reunite on the English south coast ahead of next season if the reported move comes off.

Arfield has had a good debut season at Ibrox, scoring 11 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Craig Levein doesn't think a move to Rangers would appeal to John Souttar.

Steven Gerrard has been linked with a £2m swoop for the Hearts and Scotland defender.

But the Jambos boss insists Souttar is content with life at Tynecastle.

Rangers take on Levein's side in Edinburgh on Saturday and will hand Celtic the chance to clinch the title on Sunday if they fail to win.
