Holt reckons Rangers’ Stewart was best player in Scotland at Kilmarnock

GARY HOLT reckons Greg Stewart was the best player in Scotland while on loan at Kilmarnock.

The Rangers new boy joined the Rugby Park side from Birmingham for the first part of the Premiership campaign last season.

He notched eight goals and seven assists in his 16 appearances for the Ayrshire outfit before spending the second half of the season at Aberdeen.

And Livingston boss Holt reckons he was the best player in the country up until Christmas.

Speaking on Sportsound, he said: "I think up until Christmas he was probably the best player in Scotland.

"He was the talisman for Kilmarnock, he won them games on his own and won them games with what he created. His stock was at its highest.

"Whatever transpired, he ends up back at Aberdeen whether that was fulfilling a job he felt that didn't happen the year before only Greg can say.

"But he certainly didn't hit the heights he probably had at Kilmarnock.

"At Kilmarnock he is probably the big fish in a small pool where as at Aberdeen there is a lot of big fish.

'IT'S LAUGHABLE' Kevin Kyle hits out at David Turnbull over Celtic contract situation

"I think he needs to find his best position which I think is the sort of free role at No10.

"When he was at Kilmarnock he used to pick up great positions in between the defence and midfield.

"He would drive at defences and cause them all sort of problems.

"But Rangers will be hoping that's what they can bring back, the Kilmarnock Greg Stewart."

Steven Gerrard has handed the attacker a two-year deal at Ibrox following his Birmingham City exit.

The 29-year-old will check in for pre-season with the rest of his new team-mates as they gear up for another crack at the Europa League qualifiers.

Gerrard and Co navigated through four rounds to land a spot in the group stage last season.
