Portsmouth to hijack Aberdeen’s bid to keep ex-Celtic ace Mackay-Steven

PORTSMOUTH are set to kill off Aberdeen’s hopes of keeping Gary Mackay-Steven.

Dons boss Derek McInnes has been desperate to hold on to the ex-Celtic winger but he’s set to leave Pittodrie.

MLS side New York City were the front-runners to sign the 28-year-old after tabling a pre-contract offer in January.

But League One Pompey have now emerged as his most likely destination.

Portsmouth finished fourth in the league last season but were denied promotion to the Championship by Sunderland, who knocked them out of the play-offs.

Kenny Jackett is set to be backed with cash to get them up this season and he’s able to offer a package which looks likely to persuade Mackay-Steven to head for England instead of America.
