And fed-up customers have blasted the under-fire rail operator after it announced the cancellations on Twitter on Thursday.

Suzie Quinn fumed: “It’s like me owning a shop and saying don’t come in tomorrow as we will have no staff available.”

Julie Wild said: “I know telling us night before helps but reliability would be better.”

Margaret Higgins added: “Sounds like ScotRail badly need to employ more train crew.”

And Andrew McKillop dubbed it an “absolute shambles”.

This morning services between Edinburgh and Glasgow, the capital and Dunblane, and Glenrothes, Fife, and Tweedbank, Roxburghshire, were all affected.

It’s understood the shortages are linked to delayed staff training caused by the late delivery of Class 385 and upgraded high-speed InterCity trains.

Some outraged took to twitter to voice their concerns.

Twitter user ShirlW said: “Here’s a crazy idea, why don’t Scotrail train their crew off peak when there’s less demand?”

the rail operator replied: “If it was as simple as this, it’s exactly what we’d do. We’re working to resolve this as quickly as we can, we know things must improve.”

ScotRail insist despite the ongoing chaos that things are improving.

A spokesperson said: “This has been a challenging time for Scotland’s railway, but things are improving.

“We are training more than 20 drivers and conductors every day, and this will deliver continual improvements in the coming weeks and months.”

We previously told how rail bigwigs travelling to a major industry event in Edinburgh led by Transport Secretary Michael Matheson were delayed by train chaos.

ScotRail managers were believed to be among those hit by a signalling fault on the Glasgow to Edinburgh line as they travelled to the Scottish Rail Conference.
