Sweetwater Valley 12U all-stars clear first speed bump on road to 2019 Little League World Series

Sweetwater Valley Little League’s 12U all-star team started as one of 6,500 teams across the nation hoping to take the road to the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pa.

That number has been reduced following the opening round of postseason play across the country. Locally, Sweetwater Valley defeated Eastlake Little League, 10-4, in front of an overflow crowd Sunday to capture the California District 42 championship to advance to the next level of qualifying.

The newly crowned District 42 champions will open play in the four-team California Section 7 tournament this coming Saturday at Fletcher Hills Little League.

Sweetwater Valley will meet the District 22 champion in the opening round at 3 p.m. District 41 champion Lakeside American will play the District 66 champion Spring Valley in the second game of the double header at 6:30 p.m.

The winners advance to Sunday’s semifinals. The championship game in the double-elimination tournament is scheduled Tuesday, July 16, at 6:30 p.m.

The Section 7 champion advances to the Southern California Division III tournament scheduled July 20-30 at Mission Viejo Little League.

The Division III champion will represent Southern California at the Western Regional tournament, which is scheduled Aug. 5-11 in San Bernardino.

The West region champion advances to compete in the 2019 Little League World Series Aug. 15-25.

It’s a road well traveled for Sweetwater Valley Little League 12U manager Ward Lannom, who knows what it takes to navigate the road to the Little League World Series after leading the 2015 SVLL squad to a third-place finish among United States teams in South Williamsport.

Overall, this is Lannom’s third out of four 12U all-star teams he’s managed to win the District 42 championship.

“Hard work, hitting, hitting, good defense and more hitting,” Lannom reeled off the list of requirements needed to advance toward the iconic Little League World Series.

Team chemistry is another key ingredient and it’s one he feels this year’s team has.

“We have good camaraderie on this year’s team,” Lannom explained. “We compare it to the 2015 team.”

In other words: so far, so good.

Game on
Sweetwater Valley won all four of its games at this year’s district tournament to secure a berth in this weekend’s section tournament.

Sweetwater Valley defeated Luckie Waller Little League, 24-0, in its opening game on June 29, then topped Eastlake, 19-8, in a winners bracket game on June 30.

Sweetwater Valley blanked Park View, 13-0, in last Friday’s winners bracket semifinal before defeating Eastlake in Sunday’s championship game for a composite 66-12 scoring differential.

Eastlake defeated Park View, 7-2, in Saturday’s elimination game to advance to Sunday’s final.

Sunday’s championship game took on an ominous beginning for undefeated Sweetwater Valley when Dylan Ferma and Austin Stroberg hit back-to-back solo home runs to power Eastlake to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

But Sweetwater Valley rallied for six runs in the second inning, tacked on another run in the third inning, two more runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth inning to take a 10-2 lead.

Eastlake’s Jake Robertson hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to account for the final 10-4 score.

Lannom said the key to his team’s comeback win was not to panic.

“In the previous games we did not score in the first inning (but won the games), so I told them to stay calm and focused at winning every inning the rest of the game,” the SVLL manager said. “We did that except for the last inning when Eastlake scored a couple runs.”

Sweetwater Valley didn’t waste time in making a comeback.

Sweetwater Valley loaded the bases with none out to start the top of the second inning. Starting pitcher Kapono Nakanelua scored on a sacrifice by Dante Millan to halve the Eastlake lead to 2-1.

A walk to Joey Castillo reloaded the bases. An ensuing walk to Cristian Jimenez tied the score 2-2.

A hard single to right field by Joshua Hughes scored Daniel Sanchez for a 3-2 lead. Two more runs scored on an error by the right fielder and another run came home on a passed ball to suddenly balloon the Sweetwater Valley lead to 6-2 as the team batted around in the inning.

Leo Mondragon led off the top of the third inning and eventually scored on a single by teammate Alessandro Catano to up the SVLL lead to 7-2.

Sanchez tripled in two runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Castillo stole home to account for Sweetwater Valley’s run in the fifth inning.

Sweetwater Valley scored 10 runs without committing an error in the field. Adrik Sanchez had eight putouts to lead the district champs.

Nakanelua received credit for the win, his second against Eastlake in the tournament, after pitching the opening five innings, throwing 83 pitches while allowing four hits and striking out seven batters.

Ethan Otero picked up the team’s two others wins in the tourney — one each against Luckie Waller and Park View. Otero went two-for-two at the plate in the championship game.

The Sweetwater Valley 12U team, which retains the lucky monkey mascot from the 2015 LLWS team in the dugout, remains a work in progress according to Lannom.

“It feels good (to win the district championship) but there’s a lot of things we still need to work on,” the SVLL manager said with cautious optimism. “These kids have put in the time and deserve to advance to the next level, the next tournament.”

Point of reference
Sweetwater Valley’s 2015 team defeated Chula Vista American (27-0), Park View (19-1), Imperial Beach (18-0) and Park View again (14-0) to win the District 42 championship and then topped Lemon Grove (10-0) and Rancho San Diego (20-5 and 18-7) to capture the Section 7 championship.

There are 10 sections in California split evenly between north and south. Sweetwater Valley defeated Orangecrest (12-5), Encinitas (6-2) and Ocean View (7-4) to win the South sub-division title and then defeated Manhattan Little League by scores of 9-6 and 18-5 to win the best-of-three Southern California championship series to claim the Division III title and advance to the western regional tournament.

Sweetwater Valley defeated Hawaii (16-9), Nevada (11-2), Utah (11-1) and Hawaii a second time (12-10) to advance to the Little League World Series.

Eastlake rolls through 11U district all-star tournament with undefeated record

The 11U Little League all-star division encompasses three levels in California: district, section and state regionals.

Eastlake Little League has taken the first step toward a potential state title after securing this year’s California District 66 championship with a 5-0 victory against rival Sweetwater Valley in finals Sunday at the Sweetwater Valley Little League complex.

Eastlake advances to the California Section 7 tournament July 13-17 hosted by District 42.

Eastlake will meet District 41 champion Rancho de Oro in the first round on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with the winner advancing to meet the District 66-District 22 winner on Sunday, also at 10:30 a.m.

The championship game in the double-elimination tournament is scheduled Tuesday, July 16, at 5:30 p.m.

Games are scheduled at Eastlake Little League. Spring Valley is representing District 66.

Eastlake manager Adam Villarreal said he likes his team’s prospects of advancing at home.

“The challenge in section is to get our pitching order set up,” Villarreal said. “We have a lot of deep arms (in the lineup) We need to figure out who is on.

“This next round, anyone can win it. We can’t take anyone for granted.”

Eastlake finished 3-0 in the district tournament, defeating Chula Vista American, 13-3, and Park View, 5-4, prior to Sunday’s championship game.

Sweetwater Valley eliminated Park View, 8-1, in Saturday’s challenger bracket final.

Eastlake led, 1-0, in Sunday’s championship game before Hamza Hatahet hit a three-run double in the fifth inning to expand the score to 4-0. Eastlake added another run to lead 5-0.

Aaron Corona and Noah Cook combined to the pitch the shutout victory.

“Aaron did a great job of keeping us in the game,” Villarreal said. “The defense played solid. The starters did what they’re supposed to do. But I’m really happy with how the substitutes stepped up. They have bought into their roles and played up.”

Villarreal coached Eastlake’s 10U all-star team last year that finished its season in the elimination bracket at the Division III tournament. Two years ago, Villarreal coached Eastlake’s 12U all-star team to within one win of advancing to the western regional tournament.

CVA staves off elimination, wins 10U title

It took an extra game but Chula Vista American Little League finally joined this year’s California District 42 all-star champions honor roll.

Sweetwater Valley recorded an intrepid 5-2 win over CVA on Sunday to stave off elimination and force a double-elimination championship game Monday at the Sweetwater Valley Little League complex.

With either team able to claim the 2019 district championship, Chula Vista American came through with a 5-3 victory in a well-played game by both teams to sew up the district’s final championship banner.

The district banner builds on the success of the league’s dynamite showing at the preceding Tournament of Champions in which it captured three championship titles (6U, 7U and Majors).

“We had a great TOC and all-star showing, I can’t remember if we had won so many championship in one postseason,” explained CVA president Martin Gutierrez, who also serves as manager of the CVA 10U all-star team.

“Our 10U team has worked hard for the last month and losing one of our best pitchers, Jesus Davalos, to injury and not having our ace Reece Madden available for the championship game was hard to overcome.

“We rallied around our nine-year-old Chase Miranda and he pitched a great game for us. This team isn’t about just one or two players, all 11 players had a huge part in winning this year’s 10U championship — from Roman Villalpando’s clutch two-run triple to Xavier Gutierrez’s game-changing double play with no outs and bases loaded in the sixth.”

Chula Vista American won its opening two games by a combined score of 25-2 in the seven-team district tournament before being sidetracked by a red-hot Sweetwater Valley team coming out of the challenger bracket with three consecutive elimination game victories.

CVA opened up a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Monday’s double-elimination game as Madden came around to score.

Sweetwater Valley tied the game, 1-1, in the fourth inning as Nate Garcia scored.

CVA scored four runs in the sixth inning, including two on Villalpando’s triple. Villalpando scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Davalos reached base after being hit by a pitch. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch, moved to third base on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

Sweetwater Valley scored twice in the sixth inning, with Xavier Jauregui and Garcia touching home plate.

Chula Vista American advances to the Section 7 tournament that will be played July 13-18 at Spring Valley Little League.

The newly crowned District 42 champions will meet the District 41 champion in an opening round game on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The District 42-District 41 winner will face Saturday’s District 66-District 22 winner in a winners bracket semifinal game on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, July 16, at 6:30 p.m.

Gutierrez remains enthused about what could be in store for the team.

“We told the boys not to make any vacation plans for this summer because with attitude and effort it was going to be hard to beat them,” the CVA manager said. “That’s exactly what we are going to do in sectionals — play hard, have a good attitude and effort.

“Some of our boys have a couple days to get healthy but with leaders such as Reece Madden and Chase Miranda it’s going to be hard to beat these boys.”

Grand slam
This year’s California District 42 Little League all-star tournament championship games were definitely a hit. Semifinals took place last Friday and Saturday, with three finals on Sunday and a bonus double-elimination game on Monday.

District administrator Ernie Lucero applauded the event, saying it was “very intense and everyone was treated to some great plays.”

“The baseball culture in California District 42 is a bit unique,” Lucero explained. “Here in the South County we have highly engaged managers, coaches, players and parents who take it to heart given our history of advancing to compete with other teams inside and outside of San Diego County.

“The atmosphere at Sweetwater Valley was electrifying to say the least. The games these kids play serve as a family outing that brings not only family together but also neighbors and friends.

“This year’s winners were more diversified pulling from our nine little leagues. I have high respect and admiration for all the managers and coaches who always make it positive for our kids even during the most intense moments on the field.

“What everyone needs to keep in mind is that these are just baseball games. Years from now everyone will look back and reflect on the greatness of playing Little League Baseball.

“It is gratifying to see kids that we saw play in our 6U division years ago and now playing in our older all-star division teams. Not only that but some of these kids volunteer to umpire games for us.

“I look forward to watching all of our teams play in sectionals against other districts’ winners in their respective divisions. Hopefully all of our California District 42 teams advance to divisional play in this exciting 2019 Little League tournament.”

Park View Little League will represent California District 42 at the upcoming Junior Division state tournament in Anaheim after winning the California Section 7 championship title.

Park View sweeps Spring Valley to capture Section 7 Junior Division title

Park View Little League is no stranger to producing champions over its 60-year history.

The 2009 Little League World Series champion Blue Bombers captured the imagination of a nation and help set a new standard for excellence within California District 42 Little League.

Ten years later Park View teams are still winning championships.

Monday night at Spring Valley Little League, Park View wrapped up this year’s California Section 7 championship tournament with a 12-10 victory against the host District 66 championship team to capture the best-of-three series two games to none.

Park View opened the series with a 10-4 win over Spring Valley on Saturday.

The newly minted Section 7 champions advance to the 10-team state tournament in Anaheim July 13-22 and will play their first game Saturday at 2 p.m. against the representative from Section 2.

Had Spring Valley won Monday’s game, it would have forced a deciding game on Tuesday.

Both games that Park View did win were hotly contested. Park View rallied from an early 4-0 deficit in the first game and was down 6-1 in Monday’s contest.

“The unsung hero was the team,” Park View manager Johnny Fuentes said. “It was a complete team effort. Substituting 13 kids into getting playing time is our goal. Everybody contributed at one point whether their role was big or small.”

Danny Alcala overcame a shaky start on the mound for Park View in the first game to eventually post the win. He helped his own cause in the sixth inning with a two-run single as part of a four-run inning for Park View.

Alcala reached base three times in the game on a single, hit-by-pitch and walk.

Joseph Anderson, Park View’s leadoff hitter, scored three runs while reaching base in three of his four plate appearances.

Brian Rudden scored one run while the combo of Zack Aceron and Alex Hernandez went three-for-four and scored two runs. Hernandez pitched the last two innings to pick up the save.

Park View rallied with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added one run in the third inning and two runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead.

The comeback effort in the second game was a bit more challenging.

By the fourth inning Park View trailed 6-5, but went up 7-6 with two runs in the sixth inning. Park View was down 8-7 when it scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to lead 12-8.

Spring Valley rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh but fell short 12-10.

Anderson reached base four times in the game. He came around to score on a key double by Ivan Rodriguez in the sixth inning. Mikey Rodriguez followed with a double to score Ivan Rodriguez.

Alcala went two-for-five and scored once.

Matt Bjornstad pitched four innings during the middle part of the game to brace the Park View comeback.

“He pitched lights out,” Fuentes said. “He gave up a couple runs but kept the team solid.”

Hernandez wound up as the winner in relief.

Five players return from the Park View 12U team that advanced to last year’s western regional tournament: Anderson, Ivan and Mikey Rodriguez, Bjornstad and Jordan Bleisch.

Park View sent a second team to the Little League World Series in 2016 after capturing the western region championship. Many of those players are now playing high school baseball.

Next up
The state champion advances to the western regional tournament at Cambrian Park Little League in San Jose, starting on July 26.

The six-team Junior World Series starts Aug. 17 in Taylor, Mich. The U.S. bracket includes champions from Michigan, Southwest, Southeast, East, West and Central regions.
