Rundown: Wapahani claims MEC victory over Cowan; Winchester's Lawrence commits to IWU

MUNCIE, Ind. — Wapahani outlasted Cowan in a five-set road match to claim the Mid-Eastern Conference Volleyball Championship.

The Raiders won 25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 19-17 to beat the Blackhawks for the title. With the win, Wapahani is 23-2 on the season, perfect in the conference and will travel to the Columbus East Invite this weekend. Cowan is now 23-4 on the season and ends its regular season against Blue River Valley Friday.

For Cowan, Martina Demarchi (17 kills, 23 digs), Gracie Conway (16 kills), Jascey Harrington (15 kills, 22 digs, 17 assists), Rylee Mace (24 digs) and Emma Clark (35 assists, two aces) led the charge.

Boys tennis

Delta falls in regional championship

Marion snapped Delta's seven-year regional championship streak in a 3-2 victory over the Eagles. Delta has won 23 of the past 25 regional championships and when it did not, Marion was the victor.

Both Delta's doubles teams won, starting at No. 1 doubles with Cade Brown and Mason Knight (6-0, 6-1) and No. 2 doubles Jaigen Glaze and Walker Boyle (6-2, 6-0). With the win, Brown and Knight advanced in the individual state tournament.

Delta fell in its singles spots with Tanner Southerland (6-1, 7-5), Daniel Vencel (6-3, 6-3) and Brandon Jackson (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) dropping each of their matches.

Burris freshman Charles Behrman, who advanced after beating Southerland in the sectional championship round, also lost in the Marion Regional. Behrman finished his season 19-3.

Volleyball

Monroe Central sweeps Daleville

Monroe Central beat Daleville in straight sets 25-21, 25-14, 25-17. 

Winchester sweeps Tri

Winchester beat Tri 25-15, 25-22, 25-23. 

New Castle sweeps Hagerstown

New Castle won again, beating Hagerstown in straight sets 25-9, 25-19, 25-9. Leading the way for the Trojans in the victory was Mabrey Shaffmaster (20 kills), Addie Bunner (five aces), Melani Shaffmaster (five aces, three blocks, 23 assists) and Bailey Cox (nine digs).

Boys soccer

Yorktown beats Burris

Yorktown beat Burris 1-0 to advance to the sectional championship game against New Castle. After a scoreless first half, the Tigers' first and only goal of the game came on the first possession of the second half when Peyton Johnson set up Chris Green. Hudson Bouw finished with five saves on goal in the shutout victory.

New Castle beats Jay County

New Castle beat Jay County 1-0 to advance to the sectional championship game against Yorktown. The Trojans scored their first and only goal in the match in the sixth minute when Jarel Coatie scored on a header off Eddy Yousak's corner kick. Andrew Glover finished with eight saves in goal for New Castle.

Muncie Central falls to Hamilton Southeastern

Muncie Central's season came to an end in a 12-0 loss against Hamilton Southeastern in the Noblesville sectional.

Wapahani falls to Seton Catholic

Wapahani lost to Seton Catholic 2-0 in the sectional semifinal game.

Winchester's Lawrence commits to IWU

Winchester girls basketball star Madeline Lawrence announced her commitment to Indiana Wesleyan University Wednesday via Twitter. The senior captain for the Golden Falcons has averaged more than 19 points per game in her three-year career and has helped guide Winchester to back-to-back state championship appearances in 2018 and 2019.

"I'm very excited and blessed to announce that I have committed to Indiana Wesleyan University," Lawrence said in her tweet. "I'd like to thank my my family, coaches, and teammates for all that they have done to help make this possible."

Lawrence joins a successful Wildcats program that has had 17 20-plus-win seasons since 2001-02 and won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II National Championship in 2007 and 2013.

Yorktown's Dunn commits to Embry-Riddle

Yorktown boys basketball senior Luke Dunn announced his commitment to Embry-Riddle University Wednesday. Last season, Dunn averaged 14.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game for the Tigers.

"Excited to announce that I have committed to Embry-Riddle University to continue my Aviation and basketball career!" Dunn said in his tweet. "Thank you to coach E and the rest of the staff for giving me this great opportunity happy to be part of the ERAU family!!"

Hole-in-one at Muncie Elks

Tom Kemp shot a hole-in-one on No. 9 at Muncie Elks, using a wedge from 125 yards. Steve Withrich was a witness.
