WHO CARES WINS

Newsreader Kate Silverton wants YOU to nominate your health hero in The Sun’s Who Cares Wins awards

NEWSREADER and campaigner Kate Silverton wants YOU to nominate a Mental Health Hero for our Who Cares Wins awards. Kate says winning will make a selfless NHS worker feel “seen, heard and celebrated”. Nominations close on Saturday.

IT has been said that we need 12 hugs a day to thrive. How many hugs will you have today? And how many will you give? I believe the heart of happiness lies in the knowledge that we matter, that we are loved.

And this is why we should let others know they matter too — especially those working in the caring professions. They give so much time in the service to others, often at the expense of their own health and well-being.

The Sun’s Who Cares Wins awards ensure those selfless people do feel seen, heard and, crucially, that they are celebrated.

And I am thrilled to be presenting this year’s award for Mental Health Hero. For the past decade, I have worked with leading children’s mental health charities and experts in the field of brain development.

It’s why I am so delighted that The Sun is acknowledging the selfless NHS workers who help us when we need them most.

What we experience when we are very young shapes the adult. I consider it my life’s work now to raise awareness about the importance of early years development of healthy attachment in our relationships. This work has helped my own parenting towards my children Clemency, seven, and five-year-old Wilbur.

And it has encouraged me to return to my academic roots — I have a science degree in psychology — and I’m now training to become a children’s counsellor.

Recently, I gave a mental health speech to psychiatrists, social workers and staff working in acute mental health services in the NHS. I asked them how often they had felt able to ask for support, to have someone acknowledge the sacrifices they make?

Human beings are inherently social, yet, modern society sees us too often operating alone, too fearful to appear what we perceive to be weak, when actually strength comes from us coming together.

For anyone reading this today who is feeling alone and facing issues with their mental health, I want to reiterate that it is brave to ask for help.

There is great power in human connection, it is vital in ensuring our sense of belonging and being needed.

The Sun’s wonderful Who Cares Wins awards are a metaphorical, much needed, hug for the NHS.
