TWO people have been "seriously injured" following an "industrial explosion" in Peterborough this afternoon, according to police.

Some locals thought an earthquake had rattled their home when the huge blast erupted at a XPO Logistics property at around 4.30pm on Shrewsbury Avenue, Woodston.

The cause of the explosion is still not known.

Cambridgeshire Police are assuring locals that there is "no ongoing danger".

Emergency vehicles are attending the scene including an air ambulance as well as police officers.

On social media, residents reported hearing a “loud explosion" this afternoon.

Local resident Laura Neilson said she thought the thunderous bang was an earthquake when it rocked her house, reports Peterborough Today.

I thought an earthquake had happened

She said: "I was sitting at home, then suddenly I heard a bang which shook the house. I thought an earthquake had happened.

"I tried to look online for news of an earthquake.

"I saw the air ambulance and police helicopter flying above. They were circling for a good 10 minutes."

XPO Logistics, which is a global transport and logistics provider, have yet to comment on the incident.
