Emergency services had rushed to Hamilton Crescent about 6.30pm last night after reports of a stabbing.

But police now believe the stabbing unfolded on the nearby Didsbury Road, close to the local Co-op.

The full extent of the teen victim's injuries are yet to be confirmed.

The 14-year-old boy remains in police custody.

Detective Inspector Simon Akker, of Greater Manchester Police, last night said: "We are currently responding to an incident in Heaton Mersey which has seen a teenage boy stabbed earlier this evening.

"I understand this will cause some concern given the ages of those involved but I hope the fact that we have made an arrest - along with an increased police presence in the area - will provide the local community with some reassurance.

"This increased police presence is likely to continue for some time as officers carry out enquiries and I would urge anybody who has concerns to please approach one of these officers.

"Our investigation will continue into the coming days and I would urge anybody who has information that they believe can assist to please contact us."

It comes after Yousef Ghaleb Makki, 17, was stabbed in a leafy Manchester suburb earlier this year.

Two teens were charged with the fatal stabbing in Hale Barns, Trafford, in March.

Figures from London's Metropolitan police showed that knife crime surged by 16 per cent in the capital year-on-year in 2018, as Britain's crime epidemic continues.

There were 1,299 stabbings in London up to the end of April, according to official statistics from the Met Police.
