THIS is the moment Prince William and Kate Middleton's police escort races through a junction just minutes before seriously injuring an 83-year-old widow in a horror smash.

Irene Mayor, 83, has been in intensive care since being struck 300 yards from her home on Monday afternoon.

New footage shows the royal couple's motorcade appearing to speed through a junction as the convoy makes it way through South West London.

A witness who filmed the video believes an outrider at the front was exceeding the 30mph speed limit on Wandsworth High Street.

He added: "I heard a lot of police whistles below and I looked down to see what was happening. I think there is an issue there as sirens would be better.

"I know the speed limit there is 30mph and it seemed to me that the lead outrider was going faster than that."

There is no suggestion the rider is the one involved in the crash.

'SHE MAY NOT SURVIVE'

Irene was left with several broken bones and her condition is said to be serious, but stable following the midday crash.

Her sister Joyce Shore, 86, said: “Her age is a concern as far as the hospital is concerned. Irene may not get through this.”

Joyce said her sister had been at a pelican crossing when the rider “miscalculated” and hit her as she returned from shops in East Sheen, South West London.

The Duke of Cambridge was driving a black Audi A6 with Kate in the passenger seat as they returned to Windsor for an event.

The police outrider was said to have been on the wrong side of the road clearing traffic in front.

But one witness claimed he “absolutely gunned it”. They added: “It was like a police chase. There’s no justification to go that fast.”

'BLOOD COMING FROM HER HEAD'

Another described seeing Irene spin off her feet after being struck and hitting her head on the ground.

Louise Rawlinson, 41, who runs a nearby cafe, was one of the first on the scene. She said: “Irene was talking, so that was a good sign. I was on the floor with her for about 30 minutes.

“She had blood coming from her head but was saying, ‘I’m fine. I’m not hurt. Let me up’. The officer who hit her looked grey. He was so shaken and visibly upset.

“He knew he’d done something but it wasn’t his fault. He had clipped her by accident. He didn’t even fall off.

“Irene’s daughter was in shock. At one point she stepped back and knocked the police bike over. That’s why it was on the floor.”

Wills and Kate only found out about the accident after they arrived home. They sent flowers and a note to Irene and offered to visit her.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the collision.

But Irene’s sister Joyce has called for stricter rules for royal convoys, saying: “Those motorbikes go so crazy. We can’t do away with them as they’re keeping people safe, but keep in a straight line for goodness sake.

“There’s no need for all this zig-zagging. They must not zig-zag or drive fast as they’re not gaining anything from it. It kills people.”
