TOM Cruise's highly-anticipated Top Gun: Maverick trailer has finally been released - but Star Wars fans were quick to label it as "almost identical" to the franchise's Rise Of Skywalker trailer.

The Top Gun sequel, which will be released 34 years after the original, has raised some eyebrows and left some fans triggered by sense of deja-vu while watching the film's preview.

The Maverick trailer begins with a low flying jet zooming across a desert after emerging out of the mountains.

This camera shot is very similar to the jet that is racing across a similar terrain, heading towards Rey who is preparing to face it head-on with her lightsaber in the Star Wars trailer.

STRIKING SIMILARITIES SPOTTED

Fans were quick to spot the similarities, with one Twitter user writing: "So that was Maverick chasing Rey this whole time? #riseofskywalker #starwars #topgun2"

While another tweeted: "Who photoshopped the tie fighter out of the Star Wars trailer?"

Another sceptical viewer wrote:  "Maverick flying his jet 5' above the desert sand and over icy mountain canyons is giving off a very Star Wars IX trailer vibe."

Other similarities pop up throughout the trailer, which had fans raising eyebrows at whether the two films - which are not affiliated with one another - had the same director.

Later in the Maverick trailer, Tom Cruise is seen looking out at sea, strikingly similar to the way John Boyega's character Finn does, while also looking out at the desert views.

The camera then takes you inside the plane, and films the pilot swerving through the skies.

Again, fans were quick to notice the blatant similarity of the camera shot that is seen in both films.

Yet another eagle-eyed fan took to Twitter, writing: "Anyone else besides me notice the blatant similarities between the opening sequence in the new Top Gun Maverick trailer and the trailer for Star Wars IX: The Rise Of Skywalker????"

'LOVE LETTER TO AVIATION'

The actor reminisced about filming the original Top Gun in 1986, which was the beginning of his impressive Hollywood career.

Cruise, 57, said: "I was always asked 'When are you going to do another one?'

“Well, you've been very patient with me. I felt like it was my responsibility to really deliver for you."

Cruise posted the trailer, which now has six million views, on Twitter, saying: "Maverick is back. #TopGun."

He revealed all the flying in the trailer is real and that Top Gun: Maverick is a love letter to aviation.

They worked with the Navy for the film, which is currently in production.

In the new film, Maverick is a flight instructor at the Top Gun school and guides the son of Goose - from the original - to be the pilot his father was.

Top Gun: Maverick is directed by Joseph Kosinski and stars Miles Teller as Goose's son.

The 1986 film follows Maverick as he navigates elite fighter pilot training, becoming friends with Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) and trying to romance his instructor, Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis).

Val Kilmer will reprise his role as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky in the sequel, which also stars Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman and Charles Parnell.

Top Gun: Maverick is set to be released in June 2020.
