‘SMELL OF DEATH’

Heroin addict mum ‘kills her newborn baby by injecting it with drugs before throwing tiny body in a bin bag’

A NEWBORN baby was found dead inside a bin bag after a father raised concerns that his girlfriend looked like she was no longer pregnant.

The baby’s father called police to a trailer in Alcalde, New Mexico, when he returned home and became suspicious of his girlfriend, a frequent heroin user.

Police arrived at the woman’s trailer around 10pm on Friday and “smelled the smell of death and began to look for the newborn baby,” according to a search warrant affidavit filed in Santa Fe District Court.

Officers found the newborn baby deceased in a trash bag inside the residence.

New Mexico Police Officer Ray Wilson released a statement saying: "The father said that he returned to his home in La Madera from a trip to find that his unborn child’s mother was no longer showing signs of being pregnant.

"When the father questioned the mother about the child, she would not tell the father where the child was."

State Police officers found a black trash bag near a toilet, and inside the trash bag there was a black tote bag that had the deceased baby inside, the Albuquerque Journal reported.

The father allegedly said he’d been told that the woman had been injecting the baby with heroin to keep the child from going through withdrawal symptoms.

According to the publication, the woman told police she had given birth to the baby in La Madera at an unknown date and passed out due to the pain.

She said she woke up and found the baby unresponsive.

Officers noticed that the woman was showing behaviour associated with heroin use and described her statements as "inconsistent and not making logical sense,” the affidavit said.

The woman has been identified, but no charges have been filed yet.

The father said she is a frequent heroin user and used the drug while pregnant.

Officers were also told the mother may have injected the baby with heroin.

Officer Wilson said the investigation has been turned over to the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau and remains "very preliminary with limited information".

He added that the baby has been taken to the Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque for an autopsy and for a determination into the cause and manner of death.

Charges for those involved are pending autopsy results.

Last week, horrified cops discovered a 16-day-old baby boy covered in ants in Kentucky when they pulled over and searched a van filled with human poo, bags of rubbish and insects.

The severely dehydrated baby was found under a blanket on the van floor.

His mother and grandmother were arrested on outstanding warrants.

And yesterday, a woman was arrested on suspicion of child neglect after her son, 10, died after being found unconscious in a caravan in Birmingham's Acocks Green area.
