FOUR Bradford organisations have triumphed at the British Muslim Awards 2019 which were held in the city this week.

The awards, being held for the seventh time, are held to recognise the achievements of outstanding British Muslims, across business, charity, sport, arts, culture and medicine, among others.

They endeavour to showcase the strength of the British Muslim community and the impact it has on culture, as well as its achievements over the last year.

Of the 33 awards presented at the ceremony held at The Bradford Hotel last night, there were four local winners.

The Charity of the Year award went to Save The Mothers Trust; the Religious Advocate of the Year award went to the Al-Hikam Institute; the Diversity Champion of the Year award went to West Yorkshire Police; and the Rising Star in Sport award went to Bradford Cobras basketball club.

Mohammad Shahid of Save The Mothers Trust, said they were absolutely delighted with the win, especially after being up against other leading charities in the category.

He said: "This truly is a remarkable achievement.

"It really was humbling to receive the award at the prestigious awards ceremony and we’d like to thank the organisers for recognising our contribution."

He added: "Our focus lies on long term projects and making people self sufficient, alongside this our emergency relief efforts continue across the world."

The Bradford-based charity was set up in 2003 and currently works in West Africa, East Africa, Pakistan, Kashmir, Bangladesh, as well as with Syrian and Rohingya refugees.

Its UK projects include a food bank and soup kitchen in Keighley.

After the event West Yorkshire Police Chief Constable Dee Collins tweeted about their win: “Congratulations to everyone who has been involved in what @WestYorksPolice have been trying to do to encourage greater inclusion and progression within the Force.”

Bradford Cobras basketball club, which set up as a women’s only club in 2015, has expanded to include mixed teams and currently has around 25 members, many of whom are Bradford College students.

Irfan Younis, CEO of Oceanic Consulting, which organised the awards, said: “I’d like to congratulate all the winners and every finalist from the 7th British Muslim Awards 2019.

“Every year I think we’ve seen the best the British Muslim community has to offer but every year I’m blown away by just how special the talent is and just how hard people work to service their communities.

“I already look forward to seeing what next year has to offer; I have no doubt that the Muslim community will continue to thrive and act as leaders for future generations to come.”
