WORK to convert an empty 19th century building in Bradford city centre can now go ahead.

Bradford Council has this week approved an application to convert the former Ibatex building on Canal Road into 45 apartments.

The five storey building dates back to 1854 and similar plans to convert the building had been approved by the Council, but that permission has since lapsed.

Greenshoots Architecture submitted the new plan, saying the development "will provide a much needed input of new good sized residential in this city centre location."

The application added: "The building forms one of the most historic and visually fascinating aspects of the original heart of Bradford and its historic context is taken on board with the sympathetic conversion."

Council heritage officers said: "The rehabilitation of the building is welcomed to ensure its continued positive contribution to the conservation area."

Planning officers said prior approval for the work was not required, although the development must be completed within three years, or the permission will lapse.
