BRADFORD and Leeds have been named among the worst areas of the UK for fly-tipping of white goods.

A new study by online electricals store AO.com revealed there were 46,927 cases of white goods being illegally dumped in the UK in 2018 – with Leeds topping the UK leader board with 1,688 cases and Bradford just behind in fourth with 1,336.

While most local councils offer a paid service to collect white goods such as dishwashers, washing machines and fridges, residents are often asked to leave items outside for collection.

This results in opportunistic scrap metal collectors thriving on these chances and leaving the public unaware of where their appliances will end up and if they’re dealt with in a responsible manner.

Northern cities did not come out well in AO.com’s findings, with Leeds and Bradford joined by Manchester (1,556 cases) and Liverpool (1,418) in the top four.

AO.com said it was committed to tackling the problem, launching a £20 ‘Collect and Recycle’ service, which allows people to recycle their old appliances safely. The company will collect any white goods, at a time chosen by the customer through its website.

A Bradford Council spokesperson said: “Fly-tipping is a national problem and has been increasing across the country in the last few years.

“As one of the largest local authorities in the country, we would expect that the number of incidents of all types of fly-tipping, including white goods, would be similar to other authorities of the same size, which is the case.

“While we welcome any addition to recycling options for residents, we would have to point out that Bradford Council’s Bulky Waste Collection is much cheaper than the service advertised by this company.

“We work with a specialist recycling contractor Waste Care, who collects and disposes of unwanted domestic electrical items. Where possible they will try to re-use, repair or recycle them.

“For a charge of £5 per visit to a property, Waste Care, will collect up to two large appliances, such as fridge freezers.

“For other furniture, Bradford Council will collect up to five items for a charge of £15. For more information about our white goods or bulky waste collection or how to report fly-tipping please go to our website at www.bradford.gov 01274 431000.

“All incidents of fly-tipping are investigated by Bradford Council to try and identify anything among the rubbish which can indicate its source so we can take action. Householders have a duty of care to ensure their goods are disposed of responsibly.”

“Bradford Council employs a range of measures to tackle fly-tipping including CCTV cameras to catch the culprits and seizing vehicles known to be involved in fly-tipping. We have the power to issue Fixed Penalty Notices or to prosecute through Magistrates’ and Crown courts to fly-tippers and to householders who allow their goods to be fly-tipped by rogue traders.

“We also need people to help us in our battle against this menace. If you see fly-tipping taking place, note down as many details as possible, including vehicle licence plate numbers and inform the council.”
