Even on a bleak December morning, business is visibly booming out in the Midlothian countryside, where a field of healthy Tuscan cavolo nero and red cabbage makes for a vivid contrast against the grey smirr of rain.

This is the Cyrenians Farm in Kirknewton, an impressive social enterprise founded to help homeless people.

The community living here helps the farm thrive as a social enterprise, supplying organic vegetables to Edinburgh wholesalers. In return, amid a cosy nest of single-storey buildings, the ten or so residents benefit from priceless commodities: space, safety and distance from harm.

Brian Gibb, 53, a live-in Cyrenians volunteer with a long career of environmental activism, says the farm offers people a chance to take stock and gain control of their lives.
