Boy A sat in between his parents in the corner on the long bench at the back of the court, holding his mother’s hand, his head resting on his father’s shoulder.

A few feet away on the last row of the public gallery seats, Boy B was also flanked by his parents. He, too, was gripping his mother’s arm.

On the other side of the court were Ana Kriegel’s family and their friends. Her parents, Geraldine and Patric, had attended the trial every day, hearing harrowing evidence about how their 14-year-old daughter had been lured from her home to meet a boy she liked and then was violently sexually assaulted and murdered in a dank and derelict house.

It was shortly after 2pm when word
