Scottish Conservative MPs on all sides of the party are withholding support for Theresa May’s Brexit plan, despite a pledge of allegiance from the secretary of state for Scotland.

Speaking in Falkirk, David Mundell acknowledged that he had reservations about the draft Brexit deal but said the alternatives were “even more unpalatable”. In any confidence vote the prime minister would have his support, he said.

Few of his 12 parliamentary colleagues from north of the border appeared ready to follow his lead. Brexiteers and Remainers alike voiced concerns over the Northern Ireland backstop and the future of the fisheries policy.
