Priti Patel, the home secretary, will hold talks with her French counterpart about migrants crossing the Channel in small boats after the prime minister said that those who did so were breaking the law and would be sent back.

Dozens of migrants were found along the south coast on Thursday as fine weather encouraged them to make the dangerous journey to Britain. Nine men and two women, who said that they were from Iran and Niger, were intercepted off the Kent coast at about 9am yesterday by a Border Force ship.

Forecasts of good weather over the bank holiday weekend have raised fears that even more might attempt to make the journey.
