Footballers and clubs have been urged by Phil Neville, the England women’s team manager, to boycott social media over racist abuse online.

He made the appeal after Paul Pogba, the Manchester United midfielder, was targeted by Twitter trolls for missing a penalty on Monday night.

Neville said he had “lost total faith” that social media bosses would act on the insults meted out to players.

“Twitter won’t do anything about it, Instagram won’t do anything about it — they send you an email reply saying they’ll investigate but nothing happens,” the former England player said.
