English children in care with severe behavioural problems are being “exported” to Scotland because of a lack of secure accommodation.

Research by Strathclyde University says that in 2018 more than a third of children placed in Scottish secure homes came from England. Analysis of government figures by The Times found that more than one child a week was sent over the border, up to 75 children in total over the 12 months.

In one case a boy from Kent was placed in Glasgow, nearly 500 miles away. Among those placed in Scotland, three out of five were more than 300 miles from their family, according to research from Strathclyde’s Centre for Youth and Criminal Justice.

A teenager from the Wirral was sent to Scotland without
