Expert will fly the flag for ancient Scottish tradition

As appointments go it is anything but standard. Scotland’s ancient heraldic authority has appointed its first honorary vexillologist.

Philip Tibbetts will have responsibility for supporting communities nationwide that want to develop and fly their own flag. The appointment by the Court of the Lord Lyon has been prompted by a surge in counties, towns and islands seeking official recognition for their own regional banners.

Caithness, South Uist, Kirkcudbrightshire and Denny and Dunipace have all unfurled flags in recent years, with more applications pending.
