An area of peat bog and lochs in Scotland’s far north is looking to become a Unesco World Heritage site.

The Flow Country of Caithness and Sutherland is Europe’s largest blanket bog and covers 1,500 square miles.

A working group has been set up with the aim of securing Westminster’s approval for an application to the UN body. Joe Perry, the project co-ordinator for the working group, said the area deserved world recognition.

“We believe that the Flow Country deserves to be inscribed as a World Heritage site, joining the Great Barrier Reef and the Taj Mahal, in recognition of its outstanding universal value,” he said.
