Carlos Ghosn has been indicted with the most serious charges yet for allegedly paying himself $5 million of company money disguised as a reward for a Middle Eastern car dealership.

Lawyers for the former head of Nissan have applied for bail after prosecutors formally accused Mr Ghosn, 65, of “aggravated breach of trust” in violation of Japanese law.

According to Japanese media, Suhail Bahwan Automobiles, a Nissan distributor in Oman, is suspected of receiving $10 million from Nissan and to have sent $5 million of this to a Lebanese investment firm called Good Faith Investment, said to be controlled by Mr Ghosn.
