Some Christians find each other’s views “so obnoxious that we wish they were not in the church”, the Archbishop of Canterbury has said, calling for a truce between warring worshippers.

Justin Welby urged churchgoers to “give up cynicism” for Lent, acknowledging that there were deep divisions over a number of issues within the Church of England.

His comments came shortly before bishops faced an unprecedented barrage of questions last night from members of the General Synod on the church’s attempts to provide a greater welcome to gay and transgender worshippers.

Archbishop Welby told synod members before Lent: “I urge you to consider giving up cynicism and renewing love for those with whom you and I differ. It is not easy. Some of them have views
