Gordon Brown has revealed plans to hold a series of neighbourhood assemblies across Scotland to help to bring the country “back together”.

Mr Brown, 68, said that the assemblies, which will be organised by the unionist think tank Our Scottish Future, would try to bring together Scots from all backgrounds to discuss how they wanted the country to move forward.

The former prime minister said: “Decisions in this country should not be made by dictates from the top, but from the ground up by hearing what people think and aspire to. For too long, we have listened only to the echo chambers around us.

“I hope this process of listening and talking will reveal to us afresh the ties that bind us together in our
