The attempted escape of Princess Latifa bint Mohammed al-Maktoum, daughter of the ruler of Dubai, has all the ingredients of a Hollywood action film.

After she was smuggled from one of her father’s palaces in February 2018, her dreams of freedom were shattered when armed commandos boarded the yacht on which she had fled and returned her to captivity.

An international effort to ensure that the final scene features her long-awaited release has suffered a damaging divide, with the princess’s best friend supporting one campaign for her freedom and the former French spy who organised her escape attempt supporting another.
