Jo Brand has apologised for joking on the BBC about throwing battery acid at politicians but defended comedians’ right to freedom of speech.

Brand, 61, was reported to the police after comments on the Radio 4 comedy talkshow Heresy on Tuesday in which she referred to throwing acid rather than milkshake at “unpleasant characters” . The joke was criticised by Nigel Farage, the Brexit Party leader, who had a milkshake thrown on him in Newcastle upon Tyne during the EU election campaign, and by Theresa May.
