James Anderson will play another second XI match for Lancashire next week in a further bid to prove his fitness for the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford, which starts on September 4.

Anderson, 37, aggravated an injury to his right calf on the first morning of the first Test, at Edgbaston, and was ruled out of the next two Tests. Earlier this week he played a second XI game for Lancashire against Leicestershire but bowled only nine overs, taking two wickets.

The England medical team feel he needs more bowling before the squad announcement for Old Trafford, likely to be on or around August 31. There is no first or second team red-ball cricket scheduled at this time of the season, so Lancashire have
