London is the most productive region in Britain and its economy is more than twice as efficient as that of Wales, according to research.

Academics at Durham University Business School found that London, the South East and Scotland were the most productive regions, while Wales, the South West and Yorkshire were least productive.

Productivity growth is a key indicator of future living standards. Without it, companies struggle to produce more with the same resources and, as a result, are unable to increase wages faster than prices. Weak productivity leads to stagnating living standards and businesses lose their edge against overseas rivals.

The UK has struggled with low productivity since the financial crisis, when annual growth was as high as 2 per cent. Since then it
