Charles Jencks, co-founder of the Maggie’s Centres for cancer patients, has died aged 80 .

An architectural historian and landscape designer, Jencks created some of Scotland’s most distinctive works of outdoor design, including the Landform at the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh and a similar creation at Jupiter Artland, outside the city.

The American-born author published more than 30 books on cosmic science and architecture. His most ambitious design project was the Crawick Multiverse on 55 acres of abandoned mining land near Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire.

With his second wife Maggie Keswick, herself an artist, he created a “garden of cosmic speculation” at the Keswick family home in Portrack, Dumfriesshire.
