One third of French say vaccines are dangerous

The French mistrust vaccinations more than any other nation, according to a global survey published yesterday.

The Wellcome Institute, which conducted the poll among 140,000 people in 144 countries, attributed French suspicion to the public’s scepticism of politicians and their fondness for conspiracy theories.

A third of French people do not believe that vaccines are safe, the Gallup poll suggests. The mistrust is also believed to have also been spurred by the rise of the far right. Marine le Pen has campaigned against compulsory vaccination, arguing that it represents interference by the state.

Throughout the world 79 per cent of people agreed that vaccines were safe, the survey found. In western Europe, the figure was only 59 per cent. Almost all of those surveyed
