A maritime disaster that devastated the population of a remote Scottish village 50 years ago will be remembered today.
Flags at lifeboat stations around Scotland will fly at half-mast to honour the eight men who perished when their rescue vessel capsized during a mission in ferocious conditions on March 17, 1969.
The tragedy, known as the Longhope lifeboat disaster, shook the community of Brims, a small village on the island of Orkney. Seven women were widowed and 10 children were left fatherless.
A series of events will take place to mark the anniversary, including a flotilla of boats that will gather near Brims and dip their flags as a mark of respect.
