FIRST NIGHT: COMEDY

Review: Ricky Gervais: Super Nature at the O2 Apollo, Manchester

Even half-baked, this is Gervais being thoroughly enjoyable and he has his cake and eats it by imitating and mocking intolerance
Ricky Gervais is on relaxed, transgressive form and is clearly enjoying himself

It used to be that comedians did their warm-ups in rooms above pubs for a tenner a go. Not Ricky Gervais. The lord of all comedy’s Super Nature tour is still palpably a work in progress, but even shows in 3,000-seaters like this are selling out in minutes. Hubris? Hardly a complaint to Gervais, who continues to make his outlandish success a joke to be shared with his audience. Dressed in his uniform of jeans and black T-shirt, he is quick to touch on his nice homes, nice life, nice multimillion-pound Netflix deal. Often he cracks a joke, then says, “That’s not going in.” Want to see the finished item? Watch it when it migrates to the arenas or, more likely, to Netflix.
