Edinburgh’s schools are failing to keep pace with targets as performance levels fall further behind those of every other council in Scotland.

Only 33 per cent of Edinburgh pupils attained five or more awards at SCQF level six, equivalent to Highers in the previous curriculum, according to new analysis by The Times.

Edinburgh was expected to turn out 38 per cent of pupils with five or more Highers, according to a government benchmark that places expectations in line with areas of deprivation in council regions. The measure recognises the fact that deprived pupils generally perform worse than affluent pupils.
