A Scottish FA strategic review of women’s football is examining whether the Scottish Professional Football League could be involved in running the sport’s top competitions.

The proposal is for the SPFL to take over Scottish Women’s Premier League divisions 1 and 2, and also the League Cup. These are currently run by Scottish Women’s Football, which would continue to oversee the recreational game.

The recent moves by Celtic and Rangers to put their women’s teams on a professional footing, plus the growing sponsorship opportunities in women’s football, are among the factors which have led to the SPFL’s interest.

The eye-catching performance of the Scottish Women’s national team at last year’s World Cup in France has also increased the game’s profile.
