Plans have been submitted to shoot a First World War movie produced by Steven Spielberg in Glasgow.

Spielberg has applied to shoot 1917 in the city’s category A-listed Govan Graving Docks, which have been unused for decades. Planning documents show that a film set featuring a bridge over a canal would be constructed for the drama, which will be directed by Sam Mendes.

The film-makers said that the disused Glasgow dockland was an ideal location for the scenes.

If the temporary planning permission is granted the site would be used for ten weeks, from April 22 until June 28. Filming is expected to take four days, from June 11 to 14.

The dry docks were built for the Clyde Navigation Trust between 1869 to 1898
