Syrian jets bombed targets in the last rebel-held area of the country, hours after the regime said that it had created a “humanitarian” escape route for thousands of besieged civilians.

The aircraft attacked settlements north of Khan Sheikhoun, a key town in Idlib province that has been taken by Syrian forces. Turkish media said that Syrian jets hit with “harassing fire” one of 12 observation posts maintained by Turkish forces inside Idlib.

The Syrian foreign ministry had said that a “humanitarian corridor” would allow people in southern Idlib to leave. The area was surrounded yesterday after the fierce, co-ordinated assault with Russian forces to take Khan Sheikhoun.
