It’s been dubbed the “Bird of Prey” for the natural aerodynamic shape of its wing and tail structures that mimic those of an eagle, but in fact it’s not an aircraft at all.

Rather, the new Airbus model is a design concept meant to inspire a new generation of aeronautical engineers.

Speaking at its launch at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford yesterday, Liam Fox, the trade secretary, said that it gave “an exciting glimpse into the future of the sector — ground-breaking, fuel-efficient and immensely innovative — demonstrating the strength and creativity of British engineering”.
