Times Sport Unseen: Wales v England retrospective

Marc Aspland picks his favourite photographs from the history of the grudge match

In 1997, the old Cardiff Arms Park was crammed with 53,000 as Wales hosted England in the Five Nations Championship and were crushed 34-13. It was also the final time the brilliant Jonathan Davies walked off the Arms Park. Davies played both union and league for Wales and this photograph shows his emotion after a heavy defeat.

Only four years later, in 2001, Wales again hosted England, this time in the Six Nations at the new Millennium Stadium. Again the visitors put on a devastating display, winning 44-15. Here Rob Howley gave the Welsh a little hope in the second half with a wonderful solo try. He dummied away from the England back row before pinning back his ears and outpacing Ben Cohen and Iain
