Hosting the UN climate change summit next year would pose one of the biggest challenges to policing yet seen in Scotland, the country’s chief constable has said.

Iain Livingstone said that the event, which may be held in Glasgow, would stretch resources when the force was already facing huge financial pressures.

“Significant” protests are expected to greet the 200 world leaders and thousands of delegates due to attend. Planning and policing the two-week gathering would probably mean drawing officers from across Scotland, he said.

A bid by the UK government to host the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties is expected to be confirmed later this year.
