There is “no chance” that the US Congress would pass a free trade deal agreement with Britain if there were a hard border in Ireland, an American senator has said.

Chris Murphy, a Democrat and a member of the foreign relations committee, yesterday warned the UK about the importance of Northern Ireland’s peace process to the US.

“I think there is very little chance that there will be a US-Britain free trade agreement but I think there is no chance for that agreement if there is any potential for a border to go back up between Ireland and Northern Ireland,” he said during a trip to Dublin.
