A Scottish Labour MP has refused to sign a “loyalty pledge” to the party.

Ian Murray said that instead of trying to get politicians to back the commitment the party should be focused on trying to resolve the Brexit stalemate.

Britain is due to leave the EU next month yet Theresa May has been unable to secure a parliamentary majority for her withdrawal deal. Some Remain-supporting Labour MPs, including Mr Murray, want a second referendum.

A number of Labour MPs, including John McDonnell, the shadow chancellor, Rebecca Long-Bailey, shadow business secretary, and Angela Rayner, shadow education secretary, have tweeted the pledge, which states: “I pledge to work for the achievement of a Labour-led government under whatever leadership members elect. And I accept a Labour-led government
