Two second-half goals, the first from substitute Moussa Djenepo two minutes after he came on and the second in stoppage time from Nathan Redmond, were enough to secure Southampton’s first win of the season.

It was a tightly contested first half, but ended with the away side holding a distinct advantage at the interval, even if the score was 0-0. Brighton had started the brighter with Neal Maupay and Florin Andone clearly keen to impress as they made their first starts under new manager Graham Potter. With Solly March also looking dangerous down the left Brighton threw themselves at Southampton and both Maupay and Martin Montoya could have done better with their headed efforts when March got the ball into the box.
