A police investigation is underway in Workington after an unconscious woman was found in Pow Street with a head injury.

She was found outside the HSBC bank.

Parts of the town, and a large part of Curwen Park were sealed off early today as police try to establish what happened to the woman, thought to be aged between 20 and 35.

In a statement, police said: "Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances of the incident including whether it is suspicious or accidental.

"Precautionary measures have been taken to aid investigation including scenes being established, using cordons, outside the bank and Curwen Park.

"Large areas are currently cordoned. There is no obstruction of the highways."

Police want to hear from anybody who may have been in or around this area between 1am and 2am this morning, or who may have seen or heard anything.

The woman, who is described as aged 20-35 years old and has no formal identity on her, remains in the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle in a serious but stable condition.

Parts of the town, and parts of Hall and Curwen Park were this morning sealed off and being guarded by officers as the investigation continued.

In a tweet this morning, police said: "Allerdale Police are currently dealing with a serious incident in Workington town centre.

"This involves a number of areas cordoned off for scene guards, and we would ask the public to stay away from these areas.

"There is no danger to the public."
