Workington Reds made it two wins from two for new manager Danny Grainger as they beat Carlisle City 1-0 in a friendly at Gillford Park.

Reds huffed and puffed and eventually got the breakthrough when David Symington found the back of the net in the second half for his fourth goal of pre-season following his hat-trick against Whitehaven AFC last Thursday.

Returning talisman Scott Allison had earlier seen a penalty saved after he was ordered to retake it due to encroachment, with City goalkeeper Kyle Townsley denying him and two follow-up shots blocked.

Grainger did not make a raft of changes at half-time as he had in the opening friendly, instead tweaking his line-up with the introduction of Nathan Waterston for Ash Kelly and Josh Calvert for Liam Brockbank, who was making his Reds debut after arriving from Carlisle United this summer.

Meanwhile, Brad Carroll and Brad Hubbold featured for a Furness Select side against Barrow AFC and both got on the scoresheet, with Carroll equalising then Hubbold curling in a free-kick to win the game 2-1. Both players had appeared for Reds in the friendly at Whitehaven AFC.
