New Delhi: The finance ministry cleared Arunachal Pradesh's Hollongi airport recently. The approval means that Arunachal's capital Itanagar will finally have air connectivity. The airport will be 25 kilometres away from the Itanagar and the cost of the project is pegged at Rs 1,055 crore.
Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju thanked PM Modi in his Twitter post saying, "Finally, the long pending dream of having our own Airport at Capital of Arunachal Pradesh has been approved."
Arunachal CM Pema Khandu also tweeted, "Great joy for TEAM ARUNACHAL that decades old dream of having our own Airport at Capital has been approved today in PIB at an estimated cost of ₹1055 crores. I thank Honble PM Shri @narendramodi ji for his unstinted support in having this project see the light of the day." He further said, "The Greenfield Airport at Hollongi will be a state of the art infrastructure which will propel economic development besides improving connectivity for the local population. Tourism will also see a huge boost with this project."
It may be noted that according to an earlier PTI report, the greenfield airport at Hollongi in Arunachal Pradesh, when completed, will have better facilities than the recently inaugurated Pakyong Airport in Sikkim. The proposed 2,200-metre runway at the greenfield airport will be able to handle jet aircraft that can provide direct flight service to metro cities and on demand, flight services might also be extended to international destinations.
Worth mentioning here is that a greenfield airport is an aviation facility that is planned, commissioned and built from scratch without destroying an existing structure in the area.
