With safety measures in place, cabs make a comeback on Chennai roads

Cab aggregator Uber resumed its services in Chennai on Thursday and placed a comprehensive set of safety measures for both customers and the drivers.

Chennai: With all safety precautions in place, the app-based cab aggregator Uber started its services in Tamil Nadu capital Chennai on Thursday.

The cab aggregator has launched a detailed set of safety measures including mandatory mask policy for both passengers and the drivers. 

Both the rider and the drivers will have the option to cancel the trip if they don't feel safe.

The app-based cab service has also instructed its drivers to disinfect the car before starting every trip. Uber has also advised the passenger not to occupy the front seat so as to maintain a safe distance between the customer and the driver. The company has allowed only two passengers in the car. 

"The move will bring back earning opportunities for our drivers and we will constantly work with the authorities to continue to ensure the highest possible hygiene and safety standards for our drivers and riders,” the company said in a statement.

Uber has also provided over 3 million masks and 20,000 bottles of disinfectants and sanitisers to its driver-partners free of cost, it further said in a statement.

The company also said that it has created 'Uber Care Driver Fund’ to take care of its driving partners. Uber said it contributed an initial amount Rs 25 cr for the fund and welcomed donations from citizens, NGOs and its employees.

"With the collected funds, we have disbursed grants to over 90,000 drivers. It is in addition to tens of thousands of free rides that are being offered to various state governments, and for services provided on UberMedic, UberEssentials and last-mile deliveries. Other forms of our support to drivers during these challenging times include waiver of lease rentals, facilitating EMI relief, rolling out an additional insurance policy and offering drivers access to online medical services such as DocsAPP at no charge," the report quoted Uber spokesperson as saying.
